Union City was founded by William and John Horner in 1850. John Horner was a teacher who became California’s premier agriculturalist, and he named the small city after the Sacramento River Steamship “The Union.” Union City started its life as a railroad town and slowly grew into more importance. After merging with the nearby town of New Haven it became known as Alverado and was the first county seat of Alameda county. Almost 100 years later in 1959, it was renamed to its original given name Union City after merging with the nearby town of Decoto.
Sitting about 10 miles north of San Jose, 20 miles south of Oakland, and about 25 miles from San Francisco, Union City is a delightful town, which is probably why in 1999 they received the All America City award (Congressional Record Index). The population as of July 2018 is slightly over 74,400 people (US Census Bureau, Union City Ca). New Haven Unified School District, Southern Wine, and Spirits, and Wal- Mart are the top three employers in Union City (Union City Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, June 2018). Living in Union City is a little more affordable than other major Bay Area cities. The median home value is $868,900, a lot more affordable than the cities in the North Bay and South Bay (Zillow database). The hottest month in Union City is August with an average high temperature of 79 degrees Fahrenheit, the coldest month is January with an average high temperature of 59 degrees Fahrenheit (National Centers for Environmental Information).
